Ideas Development

These are my four ideas for my final project.

Studio Set-up

Today we were given an activity to learn how a photography studio was set-up. We learned to set up the lights, flash and how to connect the flash to the camera, how to work out what the aperture should be with said flash.

Health & Safety

In anything you do in the Media Industry, you must make sure you do a risk assessment. The Risk Assessment is required to identify and solve any risk hazards. For example, in photography you don't want anyone involved to trip over any wires lying around.

For our lesson on Health & Safety, we were given a risk assessment sheet and were asked to go around the room filling in the risks and finding their solutions. One of the risks we came across was 'Water'. Water was a risk because if placed in the wrong place, it could get knocked over and spill onto the electrical's thus starting a fire or causing them to get electrocuted. The solution to this would be to ask people to put their drink away, keep their drink away from electrical's or use a screw top bottle when having drinks.

The list of risks we were looking for are;

  • Audience/Public
  • Access
  • Lifting
  • Confined Spaces
  • Animals
  • Derelict Buildings/Dangerous Machinery
  • Electricity or Gas
  • Fire/Flammable Material
  • Manual Handling
  • Noise
  • Physical Exertion
  • Heat/Cold
  • Vehicles
  • Violence/Public Disorder
  • Water
  • Weather
  • Working Patterns
  • Working at Heights
  • Burns & Scolds

Photographers Analysis

Fashion

Terry Richardson (Contemporary)

Terry Richardson is an American Fashion Photographer who has worked many different campaign jobs for people such as Marc Jacobs, Sisley, Tom Ford and more. He has also worked for magazines like Vogue, Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar, Vice and more. This particular photograph was taken for a 1997 version of Vogue Brazil. The photographer uses artificial lighting, three lights placed around the model to make it bright and clear and one in front of the model, behind the camera, so that there are no shadows on or behind the model. The posture of the model is quite unusual but it matches the unusualness of the outfit, a swimsuit with high heels.

Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin (Contemporary)

Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are a Dutch Fashion Photography duo whose work have been used in different magazines like ChloƩ, Dior, Gucci amongst others. They have also worked with a range of celebrities including Colin Firth, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman and more. Lamsweerde and Matadin tend to use a black and white theme for the majority of their photographs, this adds a feeling of simplicity. The lighting is also very simple, neither artificial nor natural, more like the flash from the camera. The clothing used is casual and the posture is quite relaxed, the simple expression of a smile and the black and white theme gives it an aura of beauty and elegance.

Louise Dahl-Wolfe (Classic)

Louise Dahl-Wolfe is an American Photographer whom has worked with Harper's Bazaar and the fashion editor Diana Vreeland. The lighting in this photograph is very dim. Natural lighting from a window to the right of the model is most likely the cause. Since the lighting is off to one side it has caused a shadow that is covering half the models face. Since most of the photograph is dark, the clothing the model is wearing is a bright colour that draws the eye to the model and makes her stand out against the dark background; this gives the model a feeling of purity. As is usual for a classic fashion photograph, the model is portrayed as very elegant and high class.

Documentary

Martin Parr (Contemporary)

Martin Parr is a British Documentary Photographer whom is most commonly known for his photography work on the social classes of England and the wealth of the western world. Documentary photography is meant to be what the photographer themselves can see, so the main focus is the subject not the effects such as lighting or shading. The lighting used is the natural light from the sun; this mean the photograph is bright and clear. My interpretation of the purpose for this photograph is to encourage children to join the Military.

Alec Soth (Contemporary)

Alec Soth is an American Photographer who is a part of the Magnum Photo Agency. His photography has been described as capturing the 'hauntingly banal images of modern America'. The lighting in this photograph is dim natural lighting coming from the sun setting/rising in the left side of the photograph. The photographed is lined up so that the main focus is the caravan but we still see enough of the sky to see the change in colours for the setting/rising sun. My interpretation for the purpose of this photograph is to bring awareness to the rundown places that people live in, in America.

Walker Evans (Classic)

Walker Evans is an American Photographer whose work can be found in institutes such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and George Eastman House. Walker is most commonly known for taking photographs of people during the Great Depression. The Lighting in this photograph is hard to tell since it's black and white but it appears to be natural lighting from the sun since they are outside.

Night Photography

Susanne Friedrich (Contemporary)

Susanne Friedrich is an Indian Night Photographer who became a photographer after traveling to Russia with her family after a life in export marketing and sales. The main focus of night photography if light is involved is the object that lights up the photograph. In this case the main focus is the boat in the background, it's bright lights draw the eye to the back f the photograph. The boat at the top is also placed on the top third of the photograph; this gives us a good view of the sea and how the lights affect it. The lights almost white out the boat in the background so it is in my opinion that the ISO was too high or it was an effect of the boat being to far away.

Toby Keller (Contemporary)

Toby Keller is an American Night Photographer who specialises in using LED lights in the photograph. The effect is created by setting LED light on a wire across the view the photograph will be of then taking the picture with a slow shutter speed and long exposure, whilst the wire is moving, Thus creating an interesting effect over time. The horizon in the background is on the lower third allowing enough room to see the reflections of the lights in the sand. In my opinion, the lights would have stood out more if the sky was darker so taking the photograph at a later time to get the process through the night.

Robert Brook (Classic)

Robert Brook is a British Photographer whose work has been represented by collections such as Corbis, Getty Images, Millennium Images and more. This photograph is quite simple and focuses on the trail of streetlights that follow the road. The lighting used is mainly from the streetlights. The curve in the road follows the bottom line of third, allowing us room to see the lights and the dark sky background. In my opinion, the image is a bit too simple but the capture of the rays of light added a great effect to this photograph.
